Former Canadian defense minister Paul Hellyer fired back at Stephen Hawking's recent comment about contacting aliens. In a manner fit for an episode of The X-Files or V, Hellyer basically said that it was too late, that aliens have been visiting earth for decades. In fact, aliens brought humans technology used today such as LCDs and microchips.
"The reality is that they (aliens) have been visiting earth for decades and probably millennia and have contributed considerably to our knowledge," he told the Canadian press. "Microchips, for example, fiber-optics, they are just two of the many things that allegedly--and probably for real--came from crashed vehicles." Note the key word allegedly.
As we reported last week, Hawking said that an alien visitation would be similar to Columbus discovering America--they would come to conquer. Intentional contact with aliens would only invite disaster, as the visitors would consume and deplete the earth's resources. "If they (aliens) wanted to use our solar system, for some super project, our complaints would be like an ant colony protesting the laying of a parking lot," Hawking said last week.
But apparently that's not the case according to Hellyer who is now infuriated with Hawking "for spreading misinformation about threats from aliens." Based on his belief, alien craft leftovers have seemingly triggered the IT and microchip revolution of today. What he didn't explain was why mankind can't even get back to the moon if we're confiscating alien technology.
"[Hawking] is indulging in some pretty scary talk there that I would have hoped would not come from someone with such an established stature," Hellyer told Silicon India. "I think it is really sad that a scientist of his repute would contribute to what I would consider more misinformation about a vast and very important subject.''
