Atom to Power Your Home

During the last CES, Intel debuted its Intelligent Home Energy Management Proof of Concept (IHEM), a centralized and automated system designed to inform home owners keep track of their electric bill—among other things.

The IHEM also allows users within the house to read video “memos” without turning on a PC, enables realtime delivery package tracking, and even supports add-on applications that extend the central dashboard’s functionality. Other features include home security, thermostat, and wireless networking management.
Yes as the name suggests, IHEM is primarily about energy.


Sensors plugged into wall sockets feed power usage info to the dashboard. IHEM’s analog clock also provides visual cues to show homeowners when peak utility charges apply, and adjust appliance usage accordingly. The system also provides a breakdown of power usage by appliance and a record of utility charges by month. Users can even earn points for some unspecified rewards program if they stay below energy usage goals.


IHEM’s central dashboard, a large touch-screen workstation designed for wall mounting, is of course designed to consume as little power as possible. It’s runs on a low-power Intel Atom processor, utilizes an OLED display, and communicates with sensors and control units distributed throughout the house over a wireless network.


Maximizing IHEM does require learning at least one new habit: regularly setting “modes” on the dashboard. IHEM’s modes are user-customizable profiles that let the homeowner apply settings quickly when they leave the house or turn in for the night. This profile-based management system lets the system warn users if they’ve left an appliance on. While many of us leave the PC on overnight, the same isn’t recommended for the kitchen stove, right?


Personally, IHEM looks like a promising must-have for future homeowners. Let’s hope Intel pushes hard to turn this “proof of concept” into an actual home improvement solution.
